Sports Data Campus and Butler Scientifics join forces to build knowledge through automated exploratory data analysis and Big Data, with the aim of continuing to improve sports performance.
The Agreement with Butler Scientifics
Sports Data Campus and Butler Scientifics have reached a collaboration agreement to foster development and research in advanced analytics and Big Data within the sports sector. Butler Scientifics is a Barcelona-based startup that developed AutoDiscovery, an automated, intelligent and comprehensive data exploration software solution.
The software enables research and data science teams to carry out in-depth analyses and uncover findings and associations with significant business value that are hidden within databases.
At the time of the April 2023 announcement, medical research was the area in which Butler Scientifics had gained the most experience. The company had spent more than ten years applying AutoDiscovery in fields such as oncology and supporting biomedical researchers in studies based on data from scientific experiments and clinical trials.
“The agreement with Sports Data Campus helps us strengthen our knowledge and presence in a growing sector such as sports data analytics. This field has many parallels with medical research, but also specific characteristics that we would like to identify and address so that we can support the different stakeholders,” Butler Scientifics stated.
Research into Basketball Performance
The startup also has experience in sports performance. Butler Scientifics and FC Barcelona jointly published a scientific paper identifying novel, non-obvious and relevant factors relating to professional basketball players’ internal and external loads that were closely associated with their individual performance on match day.

Butler Scientifics’ expertise in automated data discovery enables the identification of exploratory and confirmatory associations. Combined with the software’s compatibility with traditional statistical methods and standard Excel files, the partnership aims to substantially expand sports analytics research while retaining the simplicity needed to make an impact across the sports sector.
