MASTER’S IN BIG DATA APPLIED TO SCOUTING IN FOOTBALL
Do you want to train at the leading Campus in Big Data and Advanced Analytics applied to football? The best Sporting Directors, Scouts, Data Analysts, and Technical-Tactical Analysts from the ELITE are waiting for you to build the path together.
The construction of a Data-Driven Sporting Direction in the 21st century is one of the main pillars on which a football club must rely to make better sporting decisions, reduce costs, and increase efficiency. The role of the sporting director is not the only key figure in a sporting directorate; scouts and other analysts are fundamental in identifying talent and producing quick, in-depth reports.
For this purpose, data must now be a crucial complement, professionally implemented across every level of a Sporting Direction. Furthermore, the use of Business Intelligence visualization tools, knowledge of Machine Learning techniques, and the creation of professionalized data-based reports are, today, completely differentiating factors in the role of a scout.
The Master’s in Big Data Applied to Scouting in Football trains sporting directors, analysts, scouts, coaches, and fitness trainers in the football field to perform different roles within the football world, providing them with the tools to adapt to the demanding and ever-changing environment that comes with practicing this sport.
This university postgraduate program equips all participants with the necessary skills to work in a highly professional manner in the fields of Big Data and Advanced Analytics, in such a demanding and professionalized area as the Sporting Directorate of a football club.

MODULE 2. The Role of the Scout Under the Guidance of the Sports Director. (3 ECTS / 75 HOURS)
The scout is an essential cog without which sports management cannot function. However, it is the sports director who must establish the guidelines and steps to follow to achieve harmony that yields meaningful results in the scouting process. The scout follows the directives of the sports director and provides solutions to enhance the established strategy and identify potential players who fit the implemented playing style. Ultimately, the scout is responsible for creating visual and written reports to present to the sports director.
- The Scout in Sports Management
- Functions of the Scout
- Work Methodology of the Scout
- Real-World Examples of a Scout’s Role in Professional Football
MODULE 3. Data Providers and Open Data. (6 ECTS / 150 HOURS)
Football cannot be understood without data, as it is the best complement for decision-making. Data providers such as Wyscout, Opta, and Instat are essential for scouts and analysts within a football club to begin executing their analyses. They serve as the starting point, and this module focuses on selecting the appropriate performance indicators based on the set objective and their exportation. Additionally, the module will highlight the key differences between the providers and show their internal structure, as well as all the advanced possibilities they offer.

MODULE 4. Analysis Metrics at the Macro and Micro Level: Offensive and Defensive. (7 ECTS / 175 HOURS)
The explosion of Big Data in today’s world reaches and must reach the micro level. The scout must not only understand which data providers exist in the industry and how they work but also delve into the more technical aspects. An analysis or monitoring process is meaningless if the performance metrics or indicators to be applied are not fully understood. It is crucial to know what each metric measures and the scope it has when applied to analyzing a player’s performance, both offensively and defensively.
- The Importance of Data at the Micro Level
- Offensive Metrics: Concept and Interpretation
- Defensive Metrics: Concept and Interpretation
- Building and Focusing on Advanced Metrics
- Goalkeeper Evaluation Metrics

- Introduction to Machine Learning
- Types of Machine Learning Algorithms
- Use Cases in the World of Football
MODULE 7. BI Visualization Tools for Technical Secretariat. (7 ECTS / 175 HOURS)
Sports management cannot be understood without interactive dashboards that provide objective and customized visualizations for the sports director. The scout plays a key role in creating personalized tools for the technical secretariat. Data visualizations allow for a high impact on decision-making, optimize time, and automate the entire process of capturing and displaying information. In a single view, the scout can identify which player or players are selectable and the metrics in which they excel, based on a series of preset filters and parameters. Additionally, through visualization tools, various statistical and descriptive relationships are built to adjust performance indicators by position coherently, as well as the design of in-depth individual reports.
- Introduction to Various Tools for Micro Data Analysis
- Introduction to Tableau: Elements, Resources, and Types of Charts
- Evolutionary and Cumulative Reports of Selected Players in Tableau
- Introduction to Microsoft Power BI
- Visualization of Game Events at the Micro Level in Power BI with Data from Opta, Instat, Wyscout, and Mediacoach
MODULE 8. Video Analysis Tools: NacSport, RT Software, Eric Sport, and Metrica Sports. (6 ECTS / 150 HOURS)
The objective aspect of analyzing a player’s individual performance is crucial, but the subjective viewpoint is equally important. To visually argue the player’s skills, abilities, and technical-tactical qualities, in-depth use of tools like NacSport, Eric Sport, and Metrica Sports becomes indispensable. The focus of this module is on individual player videos, as it is essential that these videos justify the patterns of play concluded from the data, both at the macro and micro levels. One of the often-overlooked aspects that requires careful attention is the environment surrounding the player being analyzed. Without understanding the team’s playing style, a significant amount of information is lost. Therefore, the team’s specific position in its competitive environment is another critical aspect that should be studied in the analysis of individual performance.
- Introduction to NacSport, Eric Sport, and Metrica Sports
- Methodology to Optimize and Enhance Tools
- Matrices and Transforming Eventing into Data
- Real-Life Video Analysis Cases
- The Team’s Situation in Its Competitive Environment
- Building Support for the Written Report
MODULE 9. Presentation of Individual Reports. (7 ECTS / 175 HOURS)
The format and structure of the individual report must follow fixed patterns in order to communicate and conclude with maximum precision how the player being studied is. The presentation of data, combined with subjective sections and their corresponding visual support, must be integrated in the most professional manner possible. Therefore, in this module, you will learn how to formalize individual reports and share them with the sports management team.
- Definition of an Individual Report within Professional Football Sports Management
- Theoretical Foundations Applicable to Technical Report Editing
- Report Models to Be Created and Their Characteristics
- Inclusion of Data in Technical Reports

MODULE 10. Youth Scout and Processes to Apply. (3 ECTS / 75 HOURS)
The youth academy is the cornerstone of any club project. The future of teams depends on having a solid structure and methodology, both in terms of coaches and scouting for recruitment. The role of the scout is crucial in youth categories and can even become the key to the club’s future development. Detecting not only talent but also players who can build a career within the club and foster a sense of belonging is an essential factor. In this process, technology is not as ingrained as it is in professional football, which is why the human eye and the knowledge of Smart Data will help minimize errors when monitoring players to be integrated into the youth academy’s technical staff.
