Club Deportivo “Chivas” de Guadalajara and Sports Data Campus: an alliance to drive sports technology
About Club Deportivo Guadalajara
Club Deportivo Guadalajara is one of the most successful and prestigious teams in Mexico. Founded in 1906, it is known for its commitment to developing local talent and its passion for sport. With a rich history and a dedication to excellence, Chivas has won numerous titles, standing out during the “Campeonísimo” era between 1957 and 1970, and is one of the two teams with the most championships in the history of Mexican football.

In 2002, it was acquired by businessman Jorge Vergara, who drove its modernisation and success, including victories in the league and the Concacaf Champions League. Under his leadership, the “Rebaño Sagrado” strengthened its sporting structure to continue as the most successful and popular team in Mexico, winning 2 league titles, 2 Copa MX titles, 1 Supercopa MX, and 1 Concacaf Champions League title, which earned the club a place at the 2018 FIFA Club World Cup.
In addition, the club was a Copa Libertadores finalist in 2010, as well as runners-up in the 2004 Clausura and the 2007 Concacaf competition.
Chivas is known for its policy of using only Mexican players and has long been a breeding ground for national talent. Its current stadium is the Estadio Akron.

Objectives and benefits of the collaboration
Through this agreement, students from our master’s programmes and data analysts will have the opportunity to apply their knowledge in a practical environment. This experience will allow students to gain valuable hands-on experience, contribute directly to the team and the institution, and assess the results of their work in an objective and real way.
The various collaborations with Chivas de Guadalajara will be coordinated and managed by the Professional Extension Department of Sports Data Campus. These activities will focus on creating new projects that maximise the use of data to serve the different institutional and sporting needs of the club.
As David Sáez, CEO of Sports Data Campus, states: “It is a real source of pride for us to begin collaborating with Chivas, one of the most iconic and beloved clubs in Mexico, and for our students to be able to carry out advanced data analytics projects across its different areas and categories. On behalf of the Campus, I would like to thank the club professionals who have opened their doors to us and, especially, David Muñoz for making it possible.
We are sure that, in a short time, Chivas will have a top-level analytics ecosystem serving the club.”
“We are very happy to begin this collaboration with Sports Data Campus, a benchmark in the field of sports analytics education and advanced technology, where leading organisations, clubs, and companies from the world of sport and technology come together.
This relationship allows us to offer specialised external training to our employees, support the professional development of future candidates, and at the same time optimise our analytics ecosystem in the areas of scouting, analysis, and sports performance,” said David Muñoz Agell, Scouting, Analysis and Technological Innovation Manager at Chivas de Guadalajara.

He added: “We have witnessed the level of training they provide, as we already have among our staff one of their students from the Master’s in Big Data Applied to Scouting and a recent graduate of the Master’s in Sports Big Data, Santiago Manzur, currently an analyst in our department. We also see it in the performance of the interns collaborating on our projects, where we are achieving excellent results in a very short time.
We would like to thank David, Lucas, Miguel Ángel, and the entire Sports Data Campus family for their professionalism, but also for their personal approach and unconditional support in this strategic alliance.”
