Sports Data Campus and RealTrack Systems, the Almería-based company behind WIMU PRO, announced a new collaboration agreement in September 2021 to bring sports performance technology and practical expertise into postgraduate education.

Sports Data Campus and WIMU PRO Join Forces

The original announcement presented WIMU as a leading, FIFA-certified technology known for the reliability and accuracy of its physical performance data across different sports, and already used by major clubs around the world.

The collaboration would focus primarily on the Master’s in Big Data Applied to Physical Preparation in Football. RealTrack Systems would also contribute to other programmes, including the Master’s in Sports Big Data, the Master’s in Big Data Applied to Football Scouting, delivered in collaboration with Sevilla FC, and the Master’s in Artificial Intelligence Applied to Sport, among others.

These master’s programmes were endorsed and certified by UCAM and developed to meet the needs of an increasingly professional, demanding and constantly evolving sports industry.

About WIMU PRO

WIMU uses a small wearable device, typically carried in an elastic vest during training or competition, to monitor physical activity and provide a continuous stream of precise, real-time data.

The original article described data relating to speed, physical performance, impacts during jumps and falls, muscle oxygen levels and tactical positioning through geolocation. It explained how these tactical, kinematic and physiological variables could help coaches and analysts improve individual and team performance through intelligent analysis of the information.

From GPS Tracking to Football Performance Analysis

RealTrack Systems began taking shape in Almería in 2007. Isabel Pérez, the company’s CEO and founder at the time of the announcement, explained its origins:

“Four of us came together, and we seemed destined to carry out a project like this: a computer scientist, an industrial engineer, a doctor of sports science and me, with my background in business studies.

We were familiar with GPS tracking systems because two of us had worked at technology companies. Initially, they were only used in industry, allowing companies to monitor staff working out in the field. One day, our sports science specialist suggested testing the system in football, and we started with a team in Spain’s Tercera División.”

The announcement highlighted WIMU PRO’s contribution to physical performance data collection and its value for clubs, particularly their fitness coaches. Pérez described its capabilities at the time:

“The device provides 20,000 data points per second, allowing us to deliver approximately 260 variables. This information is used to monitor workload, physical preparation and players’ individual performance during training. It can even be worn during matches, as we are approved by FIFA.”

Connecting Sport, Innovation and Education

The two organisations planned to develop initiatives including training sessions and product demonstrations open to anyone interested in the technology. Students would benefit from educational content and a series of masterclasses, gaining first-hand knowledge of a technology widely used in football.

This collaboration brought together sport, innovation and education, giving students practical insight into how performance data can support the work of coaches and analysts.

At the time of the announcement, WIMU technology was reported to be used by more than half of the teams in LaLiga Santander and LaLiga SmartBank, as well as dozens of leading clubs across major international leagues. This reach made the agreement a significant addition to Sports Data Campus’s network of collaborators.
