About ThermoHuman

ThermoHuman is a Spanish company pioneering the application of infrared thermography in health, sport and research.

As described in the original announcement, the company had developed online software that automatically analyses thermal images using computer vision and deep learning algorithms. Within seconds, it provided specific metrics for more than one hundred body regions, combining numerical data with graphical representations using avatars.

The software was presented as a tool to help professionals better understand human physiology and support decisions relating to injury prevention, injury monitoring and the diagnostic assessment of conditions or injuries.

Understanding the Potential and Limitations of Thermography

When founding ThermoHuman, Ismael Fernández set out to explore how thermography could contribute to identifying and preventing sports injuries. The article reported that the company had recently collaborated with Real Sociedad on a pilot project.

“If we confirm that this technology works, all teams will be able to use it. If that means a reduction in the number of injuries, the result will be an increase in competitive performance,” Fernández explained.

The article also acknowledged that ThermoHuman’s approach was not yet a perfect method for preventing injuries. As Fernández pointed out, injuries “are multifactorial”, while professional athletes frequently push their bodies to the limit:

“They work under the stress of pushing their bodies hard, knowing that if they go too far, they can get injured.”

According to its founder, the company had achieved tangible results in monitoring injuries and their progression:

“Our application is very powerful when it comes to monitoring injuries and seeing how they evolve over the weeks.”

Practical Learning Through Sports Technology

Students were the main beneficiaries of the partnership between ThermoHuman and Sports Data Campus. Planned activities included training sessions, product demonstrations and masterclasses, offering first-hand insight into an innovative technology applied to sport.

The collaboration would also give students access to the company’s experience working in sporting environments including LaLiga and the NBA, MLB and MLS in the United States, among others.
